How to treat mold behind wardrobe safely myself?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it’s from the mold I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed it, probably from the humidity. The wall feels damp and there’s a large black patch spreading out. What’s the most effective way to treat this myself before I call a professional, and is it safe for us to stay in the room?

Move the wardrobe away from the wall immediately to stop the spread and improve air circulation. Do not sleep in this room until the mold is properly assessed and remediated, especially with children experiencing respiratory symptoms. The damp wall and spreading black patch indicate a significant moisture issue that needs to be addressed at its source.

For a temporary DIY approach, wear an N95 mask and gloves. Mix a solution of one part white vinegar to four parts water and scrub the visible mold off the wall. Do not use bleach, as it only removes the colour and does not kill the root structure on porous surfaces like drywall. After scrubbing, dry the area completely with a fan. However, this is only a surface-level fix.

The mold behind your wardrobe is a symptom of a larger problem, likely chronic condensation from the room's AC unit or a hidden leak. In Dubai's climate, furniture placed against external walls can trap cold, moist air, creating a perfect breeding ground for mold. The wall itself may be compromised.

Given the size of the patch and your children's health, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. DIY cleaning can aerosolize spores and spread them further. A proper assessment will identify the moisture source, the extent of the infestation inside the wall cavity, and the mold species. This is critical for effective remediation and ensuring it doesn't return. You can request a lab analysis to know precisely what your family has been exposed to.
