How to treat mold on damp interior wall??« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it might be from the black spots I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed this, probably because we moved the furniture to rearrange the room. The wall feels slightly damp to the touch, even though it's an interior wall. What's the most effective way to treat this mold myself and what could be causing the dampness in an interior wall so I can stop it from coming back?

The dampness in your interior wall is likely due to a hidden plumbing leak or, more commonly in Dubai, condensation from an uninsulated AC duct running inside the wall cavity. The constant cold surface meeting our high outdoor humidity causes moisture to form, creating a perfect environment for mold.

For a small area (under one square meter), you can treat it yourself. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and safety glasses. Mix a solution of one part white vinegar to four parts water or a diluted bleach solution (check manufacturer guidelines for surfaces) and scrub the area thoroughly. Dry it completely with a fan immediately after cleaning. However, this only addresses the visible growth, not the underlying moisture source.

The mold will return unless you find and fix the cause of the dampness. Given its location on an interior wall and the persistent dampness you feel, a professional inspection is strongly recommended to identify the exact moisture source without causing unnecessary damage to your property. They use moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to pinpoint leaks or condensation issues hidden behind the wall.

For health concerns, especially with children experiencing respiratory symptoms, a lab test to identify the mold species is the only way to understand the potential risk. Many common black-colored molds are not the toxic Stachybotrys species, but only a microbiology lab analysis can confirm this. Addressing the root cause is essential for your family's long-term health and the building's integrity.
