How to treat mold on interior wall and find moisture source?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom in our villa in Arabian Ranches has been feeling really damp for a couple of weeks. We just pulled the wardrobe away from the wall and found a huge patch of black and green mold spreading behind it, and the plaster feels soft. The weird thing is, this is an interior wall, not an external one. What's the best way to treat this ourselves and who should I call to find the source of the moisture?

Treating the mold yourself is possible for small patches, but the size and the soft plaster indicate significant moisture damage that requires professional assessment. For an interior wall in Arabian Ranches, the moisture source is likely a hidden plumbing leak from an adjacent bathroom or pipe, or severe condensation from your AC system.

To treat the visible growth, wear an N95 mask and gloves. Mix a solution of one part white vinegar to four parts water and scrub the area. Do not use bleach, as it only removes the surface color and can push spores into the air. The softened plaster may need to be cut out and replaced once the area is completely dry, which is a job for a qualified handyman.

Finding the source is critical. You must call a professional mold inspector or a reputable building diagnostics company. They use moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to pinpoint the exact location of the leak or condensation point without destructive guessing. In Dubai’s climate, AC units that are undersized or have faulty drainage are a common cause of condensation inside walls.

A proper inspection will identify if the issue is a simple pipe repair or a more complex HVAC problem. Once the source is fixed and the wall cavity is dry, remediation and repairs can prevent it from returning.
