How to treat moldy items and prevent closet humidity?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet, which is on the outside wall of our villa in Arabian Ranches, has developed a serious black mold problem on the shoes and leather bags I stored in there. It wasn't there a month ago, but the humidity must have gotten trapped inside. What’s the best way to treat the items that are affected, and what kind of dehumidifier or moisture absorber should I permanently keep in there to stop this from happening again?

The mold issue in your Arabian Ranches villa closet is a classic symptom of Dubai's high ambient humidity interacting with cooled interior surfaces, creating significant condensation. The porous nature of leather and certain shoe materials provides an ideal food source for mold, especially when trapped in a confined, stagnant air space.

For treatment, it is critical to assess the extent of the damage. For non-porous items like plastic or treated leather, a thorough cleaning with a solution of detergent and warm water, followed by a disinfectant registered for mold remediation (ensure it is approved by the Dubai Municipality for indoor use), may be effective. However, for porous items like suede, untreated leather, and fabric-lined bags, professional restoration is often necessary, as spores penetrate deep into the material and DIY cleaning can spread the infestation or cause permanent staining.

To prevent recurrence, a permanent solution is required. A small, desiccant-type dehumidifier is superior to refrigerant models for closet-sized applications in our climate, as they perform effectively in the cooler temperatures maintained by year-round AC. Look for a unit with a continuous drainage option or a large-capacity reservoir. Additionally, silica gel-based moisture absorbers are a good supplementary measure. Crucially, you must address the root cause: improve air circulation by leaving the closet door ajar periodically and ensure the villa's AC system is properly serviced to manage humidity levels effectively.

Given the rapid development and potential health risks of black mold, a professional inspection is strongly advised. We at Saniservice can conduct a comprehensive assessment to identify the moisture source, provide certified remediation for your belongings, and recommend engineered drying solutions.
