How to treat moldy leather and stop closet humidity?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet on the outside wall of my villa in Jumeirah has started getting a fuzzy black mold on my leather bags and shoes. I noticed it when I was switching out my winter clothes, and the room always feels damp even with the AC running constantly. What's the best way to treat the items and what can I do to stop the humidity from getting in there in the first place?

The mold you're describing on your leather goods is a classic symptom of chronic elevated humidity, a common issue in Dubai villas, particularly on external walls that are subject to significant thermal bridging and condensation. The fuzzy black growth is likely Cladosporium or Aspergillus, both of which thrive in the high ambient humidity we experience, especially when combined with the temperature differential from constant AC.

For treatment of the affected items, do not attempt to clean them with household cleaners like bleach or vinegar, as these can permanently damage the leather. For valuable items, professional restoration is advised. For initial remediation, take the items outside, carefully brush off the loose spores with a soft, dry brush, and then wipe the surface with a cloth lightly dampened with a solution of leather-safe disinfectant. Allow them to dry completely, but not in direct sunlight, before applying a quality leather conditioner.

The root cause, however, is the environmental condition within the closet. The constant AC is likely creating a significant temperature difference between the cooled interior air and the warm external wall, leading to condensation inside the closet cavity. This is exacerbated by lack of air circulation.

To stop the humidity, you must address three factors: insulation, ventilation, and moisture source. First, I strongly recommend a professional inspection to identify any potential hidden water intrusion or insulation failures within the wall cavity, which is beyond a DIY fix. Secondly, improve air circulation by leaving the closet doors ajar or installing a small, battery-operated dehumidifier or moisture absorber inside. Ensure the room's AC unit is serviced and draining properly.

Given the potential for structural damage and health implications from hidden mold growth, a certified assessment is crucial. Our team at Saniservice uses thermal imaging and moisture meters to pinpoint the exact condensation points and develop a targeted remediation plan, in full compliance with Dubai Municipality's health and safety guidelines.
