how to treat moldy leather items and prevent closet mold?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom closet, which is on an interior wall, has started to get small patches of black mold on some of our leather bags and shoes. It’s been getting worse since the weather got really humid a couple of months ago, even though we run the AC constantly. What’s the best way to treat the items and what can I do to the closet itself to stop this from happening again?

The mold growth you're experiencing on leather items inside a closet is a classic symptom of high relative humidity combined with limited air circulation, a common issue in Dubai's climate. Even with constant AC, interior closets on cold walls can become microclimates where condensation forms, especially if the AC is set too cold, creating a significant temperature differential.

For treating the moldy leather items, do not attempt to clean them with household cleaners like vinegar or bleach, as these can permanently damage the leather. For superficial growth, gently wipe the surface with a soft, dry cloth. For more established mold, a solution of mild soap (like saddle soap) and distilled water, applied with a barely damp cloth, can be used. Always test on an inconspicuous area first. After cleaning, allow the items to dry completely away from direct sunlight or heat sources, and condition them with a professional leather conditioner to restore oils.

To remediate the closet itself, first remove all contents. The drywall and shelves should be cleaned with an EPA-approved fungicidal cleaner. However, if the mold has penetrated the porous surfaces of the wall or backing of the shelves, professional remediation involving antimicrobial application and potentially section replacement may be necessary to address the root cause.

For permanent prevention, the ambient humidity must be controlled. We recommend installing a standalone dehumidifier specifically inside the closet or a larger unit for the entire bedroom. Ensure the closet door is left ajar to promote air circulation from the room. It is also prudent to have a professional inspection to rule out any hidden moisture issues within the wall cavity itself, which is a regulated process under Dubai Municipality's public health and safety codes.
