How to treat small closet mold and prevent it?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a few small black spots in the corner of our master bedroom closet, which is on an interior wall facing the building corridor. With the summer humidity at its peak, I'm terrified it's going to spread. What's the best way to treat this small area now and are there any specific dehumidifiers or tricks to stop it from coming back for good?

Based on your description of a small area on an interior wall, you are likely dealing with surface mold, a common issue in Dubai due to our extreme humidity and the constant cycling of air conditioning systems. The temperature differential between the cold interior walls and the warm, humid corridor air creates significant condensation, providing the perfect environment for mold growth.

For immediate treatment of a small area (less than 1 square meter), you can carefully clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. A solution of diluted white vinegar or a specialized EPA-approved mold cleaner is effective. Do not use bleach, as it only removes the surface color and does not address the root moisture problem. Scrub the area gently, allow it to dry completely, and then dispose of any rags used.

However, the critical step is prevention. To stop it from coming back for good, you must control the humidity. A portable dehumidifier is a good start; look for one with a built-in humidistat and a capacity suitable for a bedroom (e.g., 10-20 liters/day). The real trick is to improve air circulation within the closet. Leave the closet doors slightly ajar and ensure there is a small gap between your stored items and the wall. If possible, direct an AC vent towards the closet or use a small battery-operated dehumidifier unit inside it.

While this may suffice for a minor occurrence, the presence of mold indicates a persistent moisture issue. For complete peace of mind and to ensure the problem is fully resolved, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. Our certified inspectors at Saniservice use thermal imaging cameras and moisture meters to identify the exact source of condensation and hidden problems. We can then provide a targeted remediation and prevention plan. For a definitive solution, call us at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com for a consultation.
