How to tsop mold in windowless bathroom without renovation?« Back to Previous Page

Our main bathroom in our Jumeirah villa doesn't have a window and the walls are tiled floor to ceiling. After every shower, the steam just sits there for ages. I've started seeing these small black speckles in the grout lines near the shower, even though I wipe the walls down. What's the best way to stop this mold from getting worse without having to renovate the whole room?

Bathroom mold in Dubai is a direct result of the high ambient humidity combined with steam from showers and inadequate drying. Your windowless, tiled bathroom is a prime environment for it, as the grout is porous and holds moisture long after the shower ends.
First, improve ventilation immediately. Run the exhaust fan for at least 30-60 minutes after every shower. If your fan is old or weak, upgrading to a higher-capacity model is one of the most effective steps you can take. Keep the bathroom door open after showering to allow humid air to circulate into the drier, air-conditioned areas of the house. Wiping down the walls is good, but use a squeegee on the tiles immediately after showering to remove the bulk of the standing water. This drastically reduces the moisture available for mold growth. For the existing black specks, apply a dedicated grout mold remover or a paste of baking soda and vinegar. Scrub with a stiff brush, rinse thoroughly, and ensure the area dries completely. For long-term control, a portable dehumidifier can be placed in the bathroom for an hour post-shower to actively pull moisture from the air. Also, inspect the exhaust fan duct; it should vent outside the building, not into an attic or ceiling space, or it's just recirculating damp air. If the mold returns persistently despite these measures, the spores may have penetrated deep into the grout or behind the tiles. In such cases, a professional inspection can determine the extent and recommend targeted remediation, which is often far less invasive than a full renovation. They can also perform air or surface testing to identify the mold type, which is important for health reasons if the problem is widespread. |
