How urgent is AC black mold cleaning near bed?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment seems to be constantly damp and I’ve spotted a few patches of black mold around the vent in our main bedroom. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed this over the last month as the humidity has increased. My wife has been waking up with a stuffy nose and a sore throat every morning. How urgent is it that we get this professionally cleaned, and should we be sleeping in another room in the meantime?

Black mold near your bed is a high-priority health concern, especially with your wife's symptoms. The dampness in your AC unit is a common issue in Dubai's climate, as constant cooling creates significant condensation that fosters mold growth if not properly managed.

The symptoms you describe—morning stuffy nose and sore throat—are classic indicators of mold exposure. Sleeping directly in that environment means breathing in spores for hours. For anyone with allergies or asthma, this can trigger more severe reactions. You should stop sleeping in that room immediately and relocate until the issue is resolved. The risk of continued exposure outweighs the inconvenience.

You need a professional inspection to determine the extent of the contamination inside the AC unit and ductwork. Surface cleaning the visible patch is insufficient if the source inside the system remains. A proper remediation involves identifying the mold species, containing the area to prevent spore spread during cleaning, and using HEPA vacuuming and antimicrobial treatments on the entire affected system.

For verification, insist on before-and-after testing. Reputable companies provide lab reports showing spore count reduction, not just a visual clean. This is the only way to confirm the environment is safe to sleep in again. Given the high humidity season, addressing this now will prevent it from worsening.
