How urgent is AC mold, and can I remove it myself?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom has been leaking a little for the past two weeks, and now I’m seeing a small patch of black and green mold, about the size of my hand, on the wall behind the curtain. With this humidity, I’m worried it’s going to spread fast. How urgent is it that I get a professional to deal with this, or can I handle it myself with a bleach spray this weekend?

Based on the situation you've described, this is a moderately urgent issue that requires professional attention, not a DIY bleach solution. The continuous leakage from your AC unit for two weeks has created a persistent moisture source, which is the primary catalyst for mold growth. In Dubai's high-humidity climate, this type of moisture problem allows mold to colonize not just the visible surface but also the cavity within the wall, which you cannot see.

Using a bleach spray is strongly discouraged. Bleach is primarily water, which can actually feed the mold root system deeper into porous materials like drywall. It also only bleaches the surface pigmentation, making the colony appear gone while it continues to thrive unseen. Furthermore, improperly disturbing the colony can aerosolize harmful spores, significantly increasing your indoor air pollution and potential health risks.

For a patch the size of your hand, the underlying damage and hidden growth are likely more extensive. UAE regulations, particularly from Dubai Municipality, emphasize the importance of proper indoor air quality and remediation to prevent health issues and structural damage. A professional inspection is critical to assess the full extent, identify the exact species of mold (some black molds can be toxigenic), and locate the precise source of the AC leak.

The recommended course of action is to cease using that AC unit and contact a certified mold remediation specialist immediately.
