How urgent is balck mold in my closet wall?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we store our winter clothes. It's on the wall that faces the outside, and the area feels slightly damp. With the humidity rising again, I'm worried it will spread quickly. How urgent is it that I get this professionally treated, and is this something my building's maintenance is required to handle?

Black mold in a closet on an external wall with dampness is a sign of a moisture issue that requires prompt attention. The high humidity in Dubai, especially during summer, acts as fuel for mold growth. This situation is moderately urgent; you should address it within days to a week to prevent it from spreading to your stored clothing and other areas.

The dampness suggests a potential condensation issue from the temperature difference between the air-conditioned room and the hot external wall, or possibly a minor leak. Building maintenance is typically responsible for structural issues like leaks from outside or within the walls. Since this is on an external wall, you should report it to them immediately. They are obligated to investigate and fix the source of the moisture intrusion.

For now, avoid disturbing the mold yourself, as this can release spores. Keep the closet door open to improve air circulation and consider using a dehumidifier in the room. Professional remediation is advised to properly contain the area, remove the mold, and treat the surface to prevent recurrence. A proper inspection can confirm the moisture source and the extent of the growth, which is often more than what is visible on the surface.
