How urgent is black mold in closet, DIY or pro?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet on the wall facing the outside. It's been incredibly humid the last few weeks and I'm worried it's spreading quickly. How urgent is it to get this professionally treated, or can I handle it myself with a vinegar spray first?

Black mold in a closet on an exterior wall is a common issue in Dubai, often caused by a combination of high outdoor humidity and cold spots from AC, creating condensation inside the wall. This indicates a moisture problem that needs to be addressed, not just the visible mold.

For a small patch (under one square foot), a DIY approach can be a first step. Wear a mask and gloves, and scrub the area with a vinegar solution. However, this only treats the surface. The real urgency depends on what’s behind the wall. If the mold returns within a week, the moisture source is still active and the growth inside the wall cavity is likely spreading.

Given its location on an exterior wall and the recent high humidity, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They use moisture meters and thermal cameras to assess the extent of the hidden damage within the wall, which is almost always worse than what you see. In many Dubai villas, this is linked to thermal bridging or cracks in the external render allowing humid air to penetrate.

Treating it yourself risks inadequate containment, spreading spores to other parts of the home during cleaning, and missing the root cause. A proper remediation involves identifying and sealing the external moisture entry point, addressing the condensation issue, and safely removing all contaminated materials. The urgency is high to prevent further structural damage and potential health effects, especially if anyone in the home has allergies or respiratory sensitivities.
