How urgent is black mold in my AC closet?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our bedroom closet has been leaking a little bit for a couple of weeks, but I just opened it today and found black spots all over the back wall and on some of our shoes. We've been waking up with stuffy noses, which we blamed on the AC, but now I'm really worried. How urgent is it that I get a professional to deal with this, or can I handle it myself with bleach this weekend?

Black mold in an AC closet from a leak is a high-priority issue in Dubai's climate. The combination of water intrusion and constant humidity creates an ideal environment for rapid mold proliferation. Your stuffy noses are a common reaction to mold spores being circulated by the AC unit. This requires immediate professional assessment, not a DIY bleach solution.

Bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces like drywall and shoe leather, often only bleaching the color while the root structure remains. More critically, improper cleaning in an enclosed space can aerosolize a high concentration of spores, potentially worsening your exposure and spreading the problem.

The urgency is to first stop the moisture source. A certified technician must repair the AC leak. The mold itself should be inspected to identify the species, as some types common in water-damaged buildings require specific containment protocols for safe removal. For a situation involving porous materials and suspected HVAC contamination, professional remediation following standards like the IICRC S520 is the only way to ensure it is resolved safely and thoroughly. Do not use that AC until it has been inspected.
