How urgent is black mold in my closet after a storm?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet on the outside wall has started to show a bunch of black spots in the corner, and I first noticed it a couple of weeks after that big storm we had in early March. It's in a rented apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle, and the smell is really musty when I open the doors. How urgent is it that I get this treated, given the humidity is only going to get worse?

Black mold appearing after a storm is a high-priority issue in Dubai. The storm likely drove moisture into the building envelope, and our climate provides the constant high humidity it needs to thrive. The musty smell confirms active microbial growth, which will only accelerate as summer humidity rises.

You should notify your landlord or property management immediately. For rental properties, the responsibility for rectifying the source of the water intrusion (like a potential leak in the external wall or roof seal) typically falls on them. Document the issue with photos and a dated email to create a record.

Do not attempt to clean it with bleach, as this only removes surface discoloration and can push spores into the air. The underlying moisture problem must be solved first. A professional inspection is urgent to identify the source of the moisture—whether it’s a leak from the storm or condensation within the wall—and assess the full extent. Proper remediation involves containing the area, safely removing contaminated materials, and using HEPA filtration to clean the air, followed by verifying the space is clean with post-remediation testing.

Leaving it untreated risks further property damage and can lead to persistent health effects like worsened allergies, sinus congestion, and respiratory irritation, especially in a bedroom where exposure is prolonged.
