How urgent is black mold in my closet to fix?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a small patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, which is on an interior wall. It’s gotten noticeably bigger in the last week, and the room has started to feel damp even with the AC on. How urgent is it that I get a professional to handle this, or can I tackle it myself with bleach this weekend?

This situation is urgent. The rapid growth and the new damp feeling indicate an active moisture problem that needs immediate attention. In Dubai's climate, this is almost certainly due to condensation from your AC unit or a hidden leak in the building's plumbing or structure.

Bleach is not recommended. It can remove surface discoloration but often leaves the root structure of the mold intact, allowing it to regrow. More critically, it does not address the underlying moisture source. The dampness you feel confirms the problem is ongoing.

For a patch that is actively growing and accompanied by a new humidity issue, a professional inspection is strongly advised. The priority is to identify and fix the moisture source—be it an AC drain line issue, a pipe condensation leak inside the wall, or insufficient insulation. A professional will use moisture meters and thermal imaging to locate the source without unnecessary demolition.

Once the leak is fixed and the area dried, the mold can be remediated. For a small patch, you may be able to clean it yourself with a dedicated mold cleaner or a vinegar solution, but only after the root cause is resolved. If the mold is on drywall, the porous material may need to be cut out and replaced. Given the circumstances, getting a diagnostic assessment is the most critical first step to prevent further damage and potential health effects from prolonged exposure.
