How urgent is it to fix AC mold in bedroom?« Back to Previous Page
|
Our AC in the bedroom has been leaking a bit for the last couple of weeks and now I’ve spotted a small black patch of mold on the wall behind the curtain. We’ve had the windows closed constantly because of the summer heat and I’m worried the spores are just circulating in the air. How urgent is it that I get a professional to deal with this, or can I handle it myself with bleach?

A small visible patch with a known moisture source like an AC leak is a moderate urgency issue that should be addressed within days, not weeks. The constant AC operation in a closed room means spores from that patch are indeed circulating, which can cause sinus congestion, worsened allergies, and a musty odour.
For a patch under one square meter, you can handle it yourself. Do not use bleach; it is mostly water and can feed residual mould roots. Instead, use a dedicated mould remover or a solution of white vinegar and water. Scrub the area, dry it completely, and fix the AC leak immediately to prevent recurrence. However, if the wall feels soft or the patch is larger than your hand, the mould has likely penetrated deeper, requiring professional assessment. In Dubai’s climate, the high humidity provides a constant source of moisture that mould needs to thrive. An active leak essentially guarantees growth. The urgency is higher if household members are experiencing unexplained respiratory symptoms, are immunocompromised, or are infants. A professional inspection is advised to identify the full extent of the contamination, especially inside the AC unit itself and the wall cavity, which you cannot see. They can also perform air quality testing to verify spore levels have returned to a normal baseline after remediation. The key is stopping the water source; without fixing the leak, any cleaning is only a temporary solution. |
