How urgent is mold in damp wardrobe for health?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it might be mold. I just pulled our winter clothes out of the built-in wardrobe in our master bedroom and found a bunch of our jackets and sweaters covered in black spots, and the back wall of the cupboard feels damp. This has probably been growing since the weather got more humid a few weeks ago. How urgent is it that I get a professional to deal with this, and could it actually be affecting our health this quickly?

Based on your description, this is an urgent situation that requires immediate professional attention. The presence of visible black mold growth on textiles and a damp wall within a closed wardrobe indicates an active moisture problem, likely exacerbated by Dubai's high humidity and the constant use of air conditioning, which can create significant condensation issues in poorly ventilated spaces.

The health effects you're observing are plausible. Mold spores and microbial volatile organic compounds (mVOCs) released by active colonies can cause respiratory irritation, particularly in children, the elderly, and those with sensitivities. Symptoms like coughing, wheezing, and nasal congestion can manifest quickly after exposure begins. The dampness itself also promotes dust mites, another common allergen.

Do not attempt to clean the affected clothing with conventional methods, as this can aerosolize spores and spread contamination throughout your home. The source of the dampness must be professionally identified—it could be condensation from the AC system, a hidden plumbing leak, or capillary rising damp from the building's structure, all common issues in UAE construction.

I strongly recommend you cease use of the wardrobe and contact a certified mold inspection company immediately. We at Saniservice perform comprehensive assessments that include moisture mapping and air quality testing to identify the full extent of the problem, in line with Dubai Municipality's health and safety guidelines. Our remediation protocols then safely contain, remove, and hygienize the area to prevent recurrence.
