How urgent is mold in my AC for health?« Back to Previous Page
|
The AC in my apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle has been making a weird damp smell for the last couple of weeks. I just pulled the filter out and the entire plastic housing behind it is covered in black and green fuzzy mold. Given how much we rely on AC here, how urgent is it to get this cleaned, and should I be worried about my health in the meantime?

Mold in your AC unit in JVC is a high-priority issue that requires immediate attention. The damp, musty smell you describe is a classic sign of microbial growth within the system, which is unfortunately common in Dubai due to the high humidity and year-round AC use creating constant condensation.
For health, this is urgent. That mold is being aerosolized and circulated throughout your apartment with every cycle of the AC. While not all molds are toxic, many species found in AC systems are known to cause significant irritation. You and your household may experience worsened allergies, sinus congestion, coughing, headaches, or eye irritation. The risk is higher for children, the elderly, or anyone with asthma or compromised immune systems. Do not run the AC until it has been addressed. The first step is a professional inspection to assess the full extent of the contamination, which often extends deep into the evaporator coils and drip pan, not just the visible housing. A proper remediation involves dismantling and cleaning the internal components with EPA-approved biocides, not just surface wiping. For verification, a company with its own microbiology lab can provide before-and-after testing to confirm the system is truly clean and the air is safe. In the meantime, increase ventilation by opening windows when outdoor humidity is lowest and consider using a standalone HEPA air purifier in the main living area. |
