How urgent is mold removal for family's health?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it might be from mold. I just pulled out a storage box from the corner of our master bedroom in our Jumeirah villa and found a huge patch of black mold on the wall behind it, spreading onto the skirting board. It must have been growing there since the humidity spiked a couple of months ago.
How urgent is it to get this professionally treated, and should I keep my family out of the room until it's fixed?

This situation requires immediate professional assessment and treatment. Given the visible growth and your family's symptoms, you should treat this as urgent.
The combination of Dubai's high humidity and your villa's air-conditioned environment creates ideal conditions for mold growth, especially in concealed areas like behind furniture. Black mold can indicate several species, some of which produce irritants that cause persistent coughing, congestion, and worsened allergies, particularly in children. Keeping your family out of the master bedroom until a professional inspection is complete is the safest course of action. Do not attempt to disturb it yourself, as this can release a large number of spores into the air. A certified inspector will identify the moisture source—likely condensation or a minor leak exacerbated by the humidity—and the mold species through lab analysis. Remediation involves containing the area, removing contaminated materials like the skirting board, and HEPA vacuuming to clear spores. Proper drying and addressing the root moisture cause are critical to prevent rapid regrowth, which is common here if the job isn't done thoroughly. For health-related cases with visible growth, professional remediation is strongly advised over DIY methods. |
