How urgently should I treat black mold for my coughing kids?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black mold I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed it, but it's on the wall that faces the outside and it looks pretty bad, like a big dark patch. With this humidity, I'm worried it's spreading quickly. How urgently do I need to get this professionally treated, and should I keep the kids out of the room entirely until it's fixed?

Treat this with urgency. Given the visible growth and your children's respiratory symptoms, this is a health concern that requires immediate action. The combination of Dubai's high humidity and air-conditioned interiors creates ideal conditions for mold to thrive, especially on exterior walls prone to condensation.

Keep the kids out of the affected room and restrict access until a professional assessment is complete. Visible black discoloration can indicate a significant colony, and the spores it releases into the air are likely the irritant causing the coughing. While not all black-colored mold is the infamous Stachybotrys, its presence, coupled with symptoms, warrants a professional inspection.

Do not attempt to clean it yourself with bleach. Disturbing the colony without proper containment can aerosolize a high volume of spores, spreading the contamination throughout your home. A proper remediation involves isolating the area, using HEPA filtration to capture spores, and addressing the underlying moisture source—which is often a leak or severe condensation on that exterior wall.

The priority is a certified inspection to identify the mold species and the moisture entry point. In the UAE, remediation should follow standards like the IICRC S520 to ensure it is removed safely and completely. The health symptoms you describe mean this should be scheduled within days, not weeks.
