How urgently should I treat kids' bedroom mold?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it might be from mold in their bedroom. I just pulled their bed away from the wall and found a large patch of black mold behind it, probably from a slow AC leak. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed this now. How urgently do I need to get this professionally treated, and should I keep my kids out of the room completely until it's fixed?

Treat this situation with high urgency due to the children's symptoms and the visible size of the contamination. The combination of a persistent cough and confirmed mold growth behind the bed warrants immediate action.

Keep your children out of the bedroom completely until a professional assessment and remediation is completed. Their ongoing exposure to the spores, especially while sleeping, is likely exacerbating their respiratory symptoms. In Dubai's climate, where AC systems run year-round, a slow leak creates a perfect, continuous source of moisture for mold to thrive, often hidden behind furniture or within walls.

For a patch large enough to cause health effects, professional remediation is strongly advised. DIY cleaning can aerosolize a high concentration of spores throughout your home. A certified inspector can identify the exact moisture source (like the suspected AC leak) and assess the full extent, as mold often grows deeper than what is visible on the surface. They will also implement engineering controls to prevent cross-contamination during removal.

Following Dubai Municipality guidelines, the remediation process should include physical removal of contaminated materials, HEPA vacuuming, and antimicrobial treatment of the area. After remediation, a clearance test—ideally from an independent lab—is the only way to verify the space is safe for reoccupancy. Addressing the root cause, such as repairing the AC drain line, is essential to prevent rapid recurrence.
