How urgently should we remove black mold?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, which is on an exterior wall. It’s been humid lately and the AC seems to struggle to keep up. My wife has started waking up with a stuffy nose and I'm worried it's connected. How urgently do we need to get this professionally removed before it becomes a bigger health issue?

Black mold requires prompt attention, especially given the symptoms you've described. In Dubai's climate, where high humidity and constant AC use create ideal conditions for mold, it should be addressed within days, not weeks.

The immediate health risk depends on the individual. For your wife experiencing a stuffy nose, the mold spores are likely an irritant. However, prolonged exposure can worsen allergies and respiratory issues. Since it's on an exterior wall, the root cause is almost certainly condensation or a minor water seepage issue, exacerbated by the recent humidity. The AC struggling is a sign the relative humidity inside may be too high.

Do not attempt to remove it yourself by just wiping or spraying bleach. This can aerosolize the spores and spread them throughout the room. For a patch larger than a square foot, or any mold causing health symptoms, professional assessment is strongly recommended. They will identify the moisture source, contain the area to prevent cross-contamination, and use HEPA filtration during removal.

The urgency is high to prevent it from spreading into the wall cavity, which turns a simple surface clean-up into a major remediation project. Look for a provider that can diagnose the moisture source and offers post-remediation verification, like air testing, to confirm the space is truly clear. This is the standard for a proper, health-focused resolution.
