How urgently treat mold for kids' cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the mold I just found behind our bedroom dresser in our Marina apartment. It's a pretty big patch, black and green, and it's been so humid lately that I'm worried it's spreading fast. How urgently do I need to get this professionally treated before it affects our health even more?

With children coughing, treat this as urgent. Mold exposure can irritate airways, and children are particularly susceptible. The high humidity in Dubai, especially in coastal areas like Marina, creates ideal conditions for mold to thrive and spread quickly behind furniture and inside walls.

For a patch large enough to be clearly visible and suspected of causing health effects, professional assessment is strongly recommended. Do not attempt to clean it yourself, as disturbing it can release a large number of spores into the air, potentially worsening the cough. A proper inspection will identify the moisture source—often condensation from AC units or a hidden leak—and the exact mold type, which dictates the remediation method.

Look for a provider that uses a lab to identify the species, as this confirms the health risk and necessary containment steps. In the meantime, improve ventilation in the room and keep the children out of the area until a professional can assess and treat it.
