Immediate steps for black mold exposure wth kids?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for the last couple of weeks and I’ve just discovered what looks like black mold spreading along the wall behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom in our Jumeirah Park villa. It must have been growing there for ages, hidden from view. I’m really worried about their health and if this is the cause. What are the immediate steps I should take to deal with this safely?

The situation you've described is a significant health and environmental concern, especially with children involved. The persistent coughing is a classic symptom of prolonged exposure to mycotoxins and mold spores from a hidden colony, which is unfortunately common in Dubai due to our high humidity levels and the constant cycling of AC units, which can create condensation points behind furniture.

Your immediate priority is to limit exposure. Do not attempt to clean the mold yourself, as disturbing it will aerosolize a high concentration of spores, potentially worsening your children's respiratory distress. Isolate the room immediately; keep the door closed and the AC unit serving that room switched off to prevent spores from circulating through the ductwork to other parts of the villa.

The next critical step is to engage a professional environmental inspection company certified by Dubai Municipality. We are required to follow strict protocols for assessment and remediation. A certified inspector will conduct a thorough inspection, including air quality and surface sampling, to identify the species of mold (e.g., Stachybotrys chartarum, the "black mold," or others like Aspergillus) and the full extent of the contamination, which often spreads behind walls.

For a confirmed case of this nature in a Jumeirah Park villa, professional remediation is not just recommended but essential. The process involves containment of the area with negative air pressure, safe removal of contaminated materials, and specialized HEPA filtration and cleaning. Attempting a DIY solution will not address the root moisture problem and is unlikely to eliminate the health risk.

For immediate professional consultation and inspection, I strongly advise you to contact our team at Saniservice. Call 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com. Our certified experts can assess the situation and provide a safe, effective remediation plan to protect your family's health.
