Is AC black mold in my home dangerous?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for a couple of weeks and I suspect it might be our AC. I just pulled the filter out in our bedroom in Silicon Oasis and found these gross black spots all over the insulation around the unit itself. It looks fuzzy and the smell is awful.
Is this black mold and who should I call to get it properly cleaned, an AC specialist or a separate cleaning company?

The black, fuzzy growth in your AC unit is almost certainly mold, and given the symptoms and description, it should be treated seriously. While the term "black mold" is often used for Stachybotrys, many dark-colored species can cause health issues. In Dubai's climate, AC units are prime breeding grounds due to constant condensation mixing with dust, creating an ideal environment for microbial growth.
Your children's prolonged coughing is a significant indicator that the mold spores are affecting your indoor air quality. Mold exposure commonly causes respiratory irritation, persistent coughing, congestion, and worsened allergy or asthma symptoms. The musty smell confirms active microbial growth. For this situation, you need a certified mold inspector, not just an AC cleaning service. An AC technician may clean the coils but often misses the underlying moisture problem and contaminated insulation, which requires specialized remediation. A proper assessment involves air and surface sampling to identify the mold species and spore concentration, which is critical for determining the correct remediation protocol. Look for a company that provides documented before-and-after testing from an accredited lab to verify the cleanup's effectiveness. In the UAE, reputable remediators follow standards like the IICRC S520 for mold remediation. Ensure they address the source of moisture—often a clogged drain line or poor insulation—to prevent it from returning quickly after cleaning. |
