Is AC causing dry throat and watery eyes?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my living room has been running non-stop since we moved into our new apartment a month ago. The temperature drops are noticeable, but lately, my throat feels dry, and my eyes have started to water up when I’m in there for more than an hour. Is this just a result of the air being too dry or could it be something else?

Is AC causing dry throat and watery eyes?

In the UAE particularly in Dubai, air conditioning is a necessity as it helps maintain comfortable indoor temperatures during our scorching summers. However, continuous usage of AC can lead to some discomforts such as dry throat and watery eyes. The symptoms you are experiencing could be due to several factors related to your AC system or even the environment around it.

Firstly, the air in Dubai tends to be quite dry, especially during summer months when humidity levels drop significantly. AC systems often remove moisture from the indoor air, which can lead to a dry throat and eyes. To counter this issue, you might consider using a humidifier along with your AC system. This will help add back some moisture into the air and prevent those uncomfortable symptoms.

Secondly, ensure that your AC is properly maintained. In Dubai, we have high dust levels due to sandstorms and construction activities which can get into the AC filters and ducts. Accumulation of dirt and dust can lead to poor air quality, causing dryness in the throat and watering eyes. It's crucial to clean or replace your AC filters regularly, perhaps every 1-3 months depending on usage.

Thirdly, check if there are any allergens present in your living room that might be exacerbated by the AC. Common culprits include dust mites, mold spores, and pollen. If you suspect this could be the case, consider scheduling a professional indoor air quality inspection. In Dubai, such services can help identify potential allergens and recommend corrective measures.

Lastly, ensure that your AC is set to an optimal temperature. Setting it too low can cause rapid cooling which may lead to condensation in the ducts or on surfaces inside the room, further drying out the air. Aim for a comfortable setting around 24-26 degrees Celsius (75-78°F) during summer.

If you continue to experience these symptoms despite making adjustments, it might be wise to contact a professional HVAC company such as Saniservice at 800-MOLDS or email them at hello@saniservice.com for further assistance. They can perform a detailed inspection of your AC system and suggest necessary repairs or modifications.

Remember, maintaining good indoor air quality is crucial in Dubai’s climate. By addressing the issues mentioned above, you should be able to alleviate your symptoms and enjoy a more comfortable living environment.

Hope this helps!
