Is AC dampness causing dangerous mold in my son's room?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our Jumeirah villa has been making my son's room feel really damp for the last couple of weeks, and I just pulled back the corner of his mattress and found a bunch of black spots on the wall behind it. I'm freaking out a little because he's had a bit of a cough. How serious is this and do we need to get an expert in right away, or can it wait until the weekend?

That dampness and the black spots behind the mattress are a classic sign of a condensation-induced mold issue, which is very common in Dubai's climate. The constant AC use creates cold surfaces, and the high humidity condenses on them, providing the perfect environment for mold to grow on walls and in hidden spaces.
For your son's persistent cough, this is a situation that warrants prompt attention. Mold exposure can irritate airways and exacerbate respiratory symptoms, especially in children. You should not wait until the weekend. Move the mattress away from the wall immediately and increase air circulation in the room by running a fan or opening windows when the outside humidity is lower, typically in the early morning or evening. The wall itself needs to be assessed. Do not attempt to clean it with bleach, as this can worsen airborne spores. A professional inspection is strongly recommended to determine the extent of the growth behind the wall and inside the AC unit itself, which is a likely source. They can identify the mold type and provide a targeted remediation plan to properly address the root cause—the moisture—and safely remove the contamination. |
