Is AC leak black mold urgent for health?« Back to Previous Page

Our AC unit in the master bedroom has been leaking a bit, and now I’m seeing these black speckles spreading on the wall behind the curtain. We’ve been waking up with stuffy noses and headaches for about a week now, but I only just pulled the curtain all the way back and saw the extent of it. How urgent is it that I get a professional to deal with this, or can it wait until the weekend?

It's quite urgent to address this promptly. The symptoms you describe—stuffy noses and headaches—are consistent with mold exposure, and an active AC leak provides the continuous moisture mold needs to thrive. In Dubai's high humidity, this situation can escalate quickly.

While not all black discoloration is the notorious 'black mold' (Stachybotrys), any mold growth from water damage can cause health issues, particularly in a bedroom where exposure is prolonged. Infants, elderly individuals, or anyone with asthma or allergies are at higher risk. The Dubai climate, especially during summer, creates ideal conditions for rapid mold proliferation when a moisture source like a leak is present.

You should arrange for a professional inspection and remediation as soon as possible, rather than waiting. A certified inspector can identify the exact species through lab analysis to determine the specific health risk and the proper remediation protocol. They will also fix the root cause—the AC leak—to prevent immediate recurrence. In the interim, minimize time spent in the room and ensure it is well-ventilated. Do not attempt to clean it yourself, as disturbing the mold can release a large number of spores into the air, potentially worsening your symptoms and contaminating other areas.
