Is AC leak causing black mold and my symptoms?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom has been leaking a bit onto the carpet for a couple of months, and now I'm seeing these black speckles spreading on the wall behind the headboard. I've been waking up with a stuffy head, itchy eyes, and a dry cough that goes away when I'm at the office all day. Is this definitely black mold and could it be causing these allergy-like symptoms I'm having?

The black speckles you're seeing are almost certainly mold growth, and your symptoms are a classic response to prolonged mold exposure. In Dubai's climate, AC leaks are a primary cause of indoor mold because the constant humidity and condensation provide the perfect damp environment for spores to colonize. The fact that your symptoms improve when you leave the bedroom strongly suggests the environment is the trigger.

While the term "black mold" is often used, many species appear black. Stachybotrys chartarum (true "black mold") is less common but possible. More frequently, it's Cladosporium or Aspergillus, which are still significant allergens and irritants. All can cause the respiratory symptoms you describe—stuffy head, itchy eyes, and a dry cough.

This requires immediate action. First, address the source: have an HVAC technician repair the AC leak. For the mold itself, do not disturb it by wiping or spraying it, as this can aerosolize harmful spores. The wall and carpet likely have extensive growth hidden from view, especially behind the headboard. A professional inspection with moisture meters and thermal imaging is needed to assess the full extent. Remediation will involve containing the area, removing the contaminated porous materials like drywall and carpet padding, and a thorough HEPA vacuuming and cleaning of the structure.

Given your health response, verification is key. Post-remediation, a lab test is the only way to confirm the air quality has returned to a safe, acceptable level. This is a common issue in UAE homes, and a science-led approach with verifiable results is the most reliable path to restoring your indoor health.
