Is AC leak mold in my closet an urgent fix?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment in Jumeirah seems to be leaking a bit of water onto the carpet in the bedroom closet. I only noticed it a week ago when pulling out a suitcase, and now there's a small patch of black and greenish mold on the wall behind the clothes. With this humidity, how urgent is it that I get this professionally cleaned versus just wiping it down myself?

Yes, this requires prompt professional assessment. In Dubai's climate, an AC leak creates a continuous moisture source, and the visible mold is just the surface of a potentially larger problem inside the wall or under the carpet.

The combination of constant condensation from the leak and high ambient humidity provides an ideal environment for mold to proliferate rapidly. Simply wiping the visible spot doesn't address the hidden moisture or root cause. The leak must be repaired first to prevent recurrence. For a patch this new, a professional inspection can determine the extent of the growth and whether remediation is needed or if cleaning and thoroughly drying the area after fixing the leak will suffice.

Attempting a DIY clean on porous materials like drywall and carpet is often ineffective and can aerosolize spores, potentially causing respiratory irritation. Given the location in a closet with stored items, the risk of cross-contamination is also a factor. A proper assessment will identify the mold type and the best course of action to resolve it safely.
