Is AC leak mold urgent or can I DIY?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom has been leaking a little bit onto the carpet for maybe a week, and now I’m seeing a few small black spots in the corner near the window. It’s not a huge area, but with the humidity right now, I’m worried it will spread fast. How urgent is it that I get a professional to deal with this, or can I handle it myself with bleach?

AC leaks are urgent in Dubai's climate. High humidity and constant AC use create ideal conditions for mold to grow quickly. The small black spots you see are likely just the surface growth; the underlying moisture in the carpet and padding can harbor a much larger colony.

DIY with bleach is not recommended. Bleach only removes surface discoloration on porous materials like carpet but doesn't kill the root structure. It also adds moisture and can release harmful fumes in an enclosed space. For a small, recent leak, you can try drying the area immediately with wet vacuums and fans, but if the carpet was wet for a week, professional assessment is wise.

The Dubai Municipality has clear guidelines for indoor air quality, and unresolved mold can violate those standards. A proper inspection from a company with a microbiology lab can identify the mold type and the extent of the problem, which is often not visible. They use targeted, EPA-approved biocides that penetrate and sterilize the material instead of just bleaching it. Given the proximity to your bedroom, where you spend hours breathing the air, getting a verified clean result is important for health.
