Is AC mold an urgent issue needing professionals?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment seems to be blowing out a faint damp smell, and I’ve just spotted a few small black patches in the corner behind the wardrobe in my master bedroom. It’s been like this for a couple of weeks since the humidity really kicked in. Given how bad the mold problem can get here, is this something I need to get professionals to handle immediately this weekend, or can it wait until next week?

The damp smell and visible patches indicate active mold growth, which is common here due to our high humidity and constant AC use. While not always an emergency, it should be addressed promptly.

The urgency depends on the extent. Small, isolated patches (under one square meter) on a non-porous surface can sometimes be managed with careful DIY cleaning using a microfiber cloth and a solution of detergent and water. However, if the smell is strong, the patches are spreading, or anyone in the home has respiratory sensitivities, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. Mold behind walls or in AC units often requires professional remediation to address the root moisture source and prevent recurrence.

Given Dubai's climate, mold can spread quickly. Waiting a week could allow it to colonize the wall cavity or your AC ductwork, turning a localized issue into a much larger problem. A certified inspector can use moisture meters and borescopes to assess the hidden extent and identify the moisture source—often condensation from AC units or a small leak. For verifiable results, the process should include before-and-after surface or air samples analyzed by an accredited microbiology lab to confirm the type and that the spore count has been returned to safe levels.
