Is AC mold behind curtain dangerous for baby's room?« Back to Previous Page

Our AC unit in the bedroom has been leaking a little bit for the last couple of weeks and now I’m seeing a patch of black mold, about the size of my hand, on the wall behind the curtain. My husband says it's not a big deal, but with our baby sleeping in here, I'm really worried. How urgent is it that we get this professionally cleaned, and should I be keeping the baby out of the room?

AC condensation leaks are a primary cause of indoor mold in Dubai due to our high humidity. The black patch indicates active growth, which is a legitimate health concern, especially for infants. Mold releases spores and microscopic fragments that can irritate a baby's developing respiratory system, potentially worsening allergies or causing congestion and coughing.
You should keep the baby out of that room until the issue is resolved. The leak must be repaired first; otherwise, the mold will return even if cleaned. A professional inspection is urgent to assess the moisture source and the extent of growth, which can often spread inside the wall cavity. For a case involving an infant, a lab-based mold test can identify the species to determine the specific risk level, as not all black discoloration is the most hazardous type. Proper remediation involves containing the area, physically removing the contaminated material, and using HEPA filtration to capture airborne spores, not just wiping the surface. Once the moisture problem is fixed and the mold is professionally removed, the room will be safe again. |
