Is AC mold causing illness; treat urgently?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our master bedroom in our Jumeirah villa has been leaking a bit for the last couple of months, and now we’ve found a patch of black mold behind the headboard. My husband has had a persistent cough and headaches for weeks that seem to get better when he’s at the office. Given how humid it's been, how urgently do we need to get this professionally treated—are we talking days or could it wait a couple of weeks?

The symptoms you describe, especially improving when away from the bedroom, strongly suggest the AC mould is a contributing factor. The persistent humidity here creates ideal conditions for mould growth, particularly when an AC leak provides a constant moisture source. This is a health concern that warrants professional attention within days, not weeks.

The black patch behind the headboard is just the visible growth; the AC unit itself and its ducting likely harbour a much larger colony that is being aerosolised and circulated. Common species in Dubai's AC systems, like Cladosporium or Aspergillus, are known to cause the exact respiratory irritation and headaches your husband is experiencing.

For a situation involving active leaks and illness, a professional inspection is necessary. They will identify the moisture source, contain the affected area to prevent spore spread during investigation, and take samples for lab analysis to confirm the species. This diagnostic step is critical, as it determines the appropriate remediation protocol. In the interim, avoid disturbing the mould yourself and keep the bedroom door closed to contain spores.

The urgency is high because the continuous leak means the problem is actively worsening. Remediation involves fixing the leak at its source, professionally removing all contaminated materials, and a thorough cleaning of the entire AC system with documented before-and-after testing to verify the environment is safe. Delaying allows the colony to expand and prolongs exposure.
