Is AC mold causing my allergy symptoms in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment seems to be blowing out a really damp, earthy smell, and for the last couple of weeks, my throat has been constantly scratchy and I'm waking up with a stuffy nose. I'm in a studio in Jumeirah Village Circle, and the humidity has been terrible lately. I’ve wiped down the vents but the smell comes right back. Could this mold in the AC be causing these symptoms, or is it just the usual Dubai allergies?

Yes, AC mold is a very likely cause of your symptoms in Dubai. The damp, earthy smell is a classic indicator of microbial growth inside the unit or ductwork. Your scratchy throat and morning congestion are common reactions to inhaling mold spores and fragments circulated by the AC, which runs constantly in this climate.

The high humidity in JVC creates ideal conditions for mold. Condensation builds up inside AC units, and if the drain line is clogged or the drip pan is dirty, it becomes a breeding ground. Wiping the vent only removes surface spores; the source is deep within the system.

While Dubai's desert can produce allergens like dust and sand, your symptoms coinciding with the AC smell strongly point to an indoor source. A professional inspection is the definitive way to confirm this. They use borescopes to view inside the ducts and can recommend a remediation plan, which often involves a full system clean and coil treatment, not just wiping vents. For verification, some companies with in-house labs can test swab samples to identify the specific type of mold, which helps assess the potential health risk. Addressing the humidity with a dehumidifier can also help reduce the chance of it returning.
