Is AC mold causing my morning sickness?« Back to Previous Page
|
The AC in our bedroom in Jumeirah seems to be blowing out a weird, damp smell for the past couple of months. I’ve been waking up with a stuffy nose and a sore throat that clears up after I leave for work. I just pulled the filter out and the back of it is covered in black and green specks. Could this mold be the reason I’ve been feeling so unwell every morning?

Based on your description, it is highly probable that microbial growth, specifically mold, within your air conditioning system is the direct cause of your morning respiratory symptoms. The damp, musty odor and the visible black and green specks on the filter are classic indicators of a contaminated AC unit. The symptoms you describe—stuffy nose and sore throat that resolve when you leave the contaminated environment—are consistent with exposure to mold spores and microbial volatile organic compounds (mVOCs) being circulated throughout your bedroom.
In Dubai's climate, the combination of high external humidity and the constant cooling cycle of AC units creates significant condensation within the system. This moisture, combined with organic dust on the evaporator coils and in the drip pans, provides an ideal environment for mold proliferation. When the AC blower engages, it aerosolizes these spores and mVOCs directly into your breathing zone while you sleep. A dirty filter exacerbates the problem by becoming a secondary source of contamination and reducing airflow, which can cause the evaporator coil to become colder and produce even more condensation. This is a serious indoor air quality issue. DIY cleaning is not recommended as it often disturbs the colony, causing a widespread release of spores without effectively eliminating the root cause within the ductwork and coils. UAE regulations, such as those from the Dubai Municipality, emphasize the importance of proper indoor air quality and sanitation. For a definitive assessment and safe, effective remediation, a professional inspection is crucial. Our certified team at Saniservice uses specialized tools like borescopes and moisture meters to inspect the entire system, followed by EPA-approved antimicrobial treatments and HVAC hygienization protocols to restore your air quality and protect your health.
