Is AC mold causing our cough and stuffy nose?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our bedroom has been leaking a bit for a couple of months, and now I’ve spotted black spots around the vent. Since the humidity spiked, my wife and I have both had this constant stuffy nose and dry cough that just won’t go away, even though we’re otherwise healthy. Is it possible this is from the mold, and should we be getting a specific kind of doctor to check this out?

Based on your description, it is highly probable that the black spots around your AC vent and your persistent respiratory symptoms are directly linked. The conditions you've described—a leaking AC unit combined with Dubai's high ambient humidity—create a perfect environment for mold proliferation, primarily Cladosporium or Aspergillus species, which are common in such scenarios.

The constant stuffy nose and dry cough are classic indicators of mold exposure, known as allergic rhinitis and irritant reactions. Mycotoxins and mold spores released into the air you breathe irritate the respiratory tract, leading to these chronic, non-resolving symptoms even in otherwise healthy individuals. Year-round AC use in the UAE means these spores are continuously circulated throughout your living space.

This situation requires immediate professional attention. DIY cleaning is insufficient and can aerosolize spores, worsening contamination. UAE regulations, particularly Dubai Municipality's public health and safety codes, emphasize the importance of addressing indoor air quality issues like microbial growth in AC systems to prevent health hazards.

I strongly recommend a certified mold inspection. Our team at Saniservice uses specialized equipment like moisture meters, borescopes, and air quality pumps to identify the species, spore count, and full extent of contamination, which is often hidden within the AC ductwork. Following the assessment, a remediation plan using HEPA filtration and EPA-approved antimicrobials will be developed to resolve the issue safely and permanently.

For your health, consider consulting an allergist or pulmonologist who can confirm the link between your symptoms and environmental exposure. To schedule a professional inspection and protect your health, please call us at 800-MOLDS or email hello@saniservice.com.
