is ac mold causing our sickness and how to clean?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our Jumeirah villa has been making this weird damp smell for a couple of months now. Since the last round of humidity, my youngest has had a constant runny nose and I’ve been waking up with a sore throat and headaches. I just pulled the air filter out and the back of it is covered in black and green fuzzy spots. Could this be causing our symptoms and how do we get it properly cleaned so it’s safe?

Based on the symptoms and visual confirmation, the mold in your AC is very likely the cause of your family's health issues. The damp smell, coupled with the physical irritation like your child's runny nose and your sore throat and headaches, are classic responses to mold exposure from a contaminated air handling system.

Given the high humidity and year-round AC use in Dubai, this is a common problem. The condensation inside AC units creates a perfect damp environment for mold to thrive, especially after humid periods. The filter is just the visible part; the contamination is almost certainly deeper within the ductwork and evaporator coil.

For a villa system, a simple filter replacement and surface cleaning are insufficient. The entire system requires a professional deep cleaning that includes the evaporator coils, drip pans, and ductwork. Look for a provider that uses methods like steam cleaning or antimicrobial coatings and, crucially, can provide before-and-after documentation of the remediation, such as lab test results showing spore count reduction. This verifies the job was done correctly, not just cosmetically.

Due to the extent of the visible growth and the persistent symptoms, a professional inspection is strongly recommended to assess the full scope before remediation begins. This ensures the correct cleaning protocol is used to make the system safe.
