Is AC mold causing our sinus headaches?« Back to Previous Page

The AC unit in our bedroom in Jumeirah has been leaking a bit for a couple of months, and now I’m seeing these black speckles around the vent on the wall. Lately, my husband and I have been waking up with terrible sinus headaches and a dry cough that goes away when we leave for work. Is this definitely black mold and could it be causing our symptoms?

Leaking AC units in Dubai's climate are a primary cause of indoor mold growth. The constant humidity and condensation create an ideal environment for it. The black speckles around your vent are very likely mold growth, and your symptoms—sinus headaches and a dry cough that improve when you leave the room—are consistent with mold exposure.

While "black mold" is a common term, the specific species (like Stachybotrys) requires lab identification to determine its potential risk. However, any mold colony in your AC system can release spores and microbial compounds into the air you breathe all night, irritating respiratory systems and causing the symptoms you describe.

For a situation like this with active leakage and health effects, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They will identify the moisture source, assess the extent of the growth within the unit and ductwork (which is often worse than what's visible), and take samples for lab analysis to identify the mold species.

Do not attempt to clean it yourself with bleach, as this can aggravate the problem by releasing more spores. The first step is to address the leak with your AC technician to stop the moisture source. A proper remediation will then involve cleaning the entire affected system, not just the visible vent, to prevent the symptoms from returning.
