Is AC mold causing our sore throats and stuffy noses?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment in Jumeirah seems to be blowing out a weird, damp smell for the last couple of weeks. Since then, my wife and I have both had constant sore throats and stuffy noses that just won't clear up. I just pulled the filter out and the back of it is covered in black and greenish spots. Is this definitely mold and could it be causing our symptoms, or is it just dust buildup?

Based on your description, it is highly probable that you are dealing with a significant mold contamination within your AC system. The black and greenish spots on the filter are classic indicators of fungal growth. The damp, musty odor is a result of microbial volatile organic compounds (MVOCs) released by actively colonizing mold, a common issue in Dubai due to the high humidity levels that promote condensation inside AC units.

Your symptoms—persistent sore throats and nasal congestion—are consistent with mold exposure. Inhaling airborne spores and MVOCs can cause these types of upper respiratory tract irritations, particularly in a confined space like an apartment where the AC runs continuously. This is not merely dust; dust does not produce a damp smell or cause such persistent health effects.

The UAE's climate is a primary catalyst for this problem. The constant cycling between extreme outdoor humidity and cool, dry indoor environments creates massive condensation within the AC ductwork, providing the perfect breeding ground for mold. Simply replacing the filter is insufficient, as the contamination is likely deep within the evaporator coils and ducts.

For your health and safety, I strongly recommend a professional inspection and indoor air quality assessment. DIY cleaning is not advised as it can aerosolize a high concentration of spores, worsening the contamination and your exposure. Our certified teams at Saniservice use specialized tools like borescopes and moisture meters to assess the extent of the contamination within the ductwork, followed by a comprehensive hygienization protocol that includes antimicrobial fogging to address the entire system.
