Is AC mold causing our stuffy noses in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our master bedroom in Dubai Marina seems to be constantly leaking a little bit, and now I'm seeing these black specks around the vent on the wall. We've been waking up with stuffy noses for a couple of months and I'm starting to worry it's mold. Is this something I can check and clean myself with bleach, or is it time to call in a professional for a proper inspection?

Based on your description, it is highly probable that AC mold is the cause of your persistent stuffy noses. The combination of a leaking unit and visible black specks around the vent is a classic indicator of a mold issue. In Dubai's high humidity, constant condensation from a small leak creates the perfect damp environment for mold to thrive inside the ductwork and on your walls.

A DIY bleach clean is not recommended. Bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces like drywall and can actually aggravate the problem by adding moisture. More critically, it only addresses the visible specks, not the colony growing unseen inside the AC unit and ducts, which is what you're breathing in all night. Disturbing it without proper containment can also spread spores throughout the room.

For a confirmed leak and visible growth, a professional inspection is the necessary next step. They will use tools like borescopes to inspect inside the ducts and air quality tests to identify the mold species and spore concentration. This is crucial, as some types, like Aspergillus, are common here and can cause the exact respiratory irritation you're experiencing. Reputable inspectors in Dubai should provide a detailed report with lab results, not just a visual assessment. Addressing the root cause—fixing the leak and properly remediating the contamination—is the only way to resolve the health symptoms and prevent it from recurring.
