Is AC mold dangerous for my child's health?« Back to Previous Page

The AC unit in my bedroom in our Jumeirah villa has been leaking a bit, and now I'm seeing these black splotches spreading on the wall behind the wardrobe. My youngest has had a runny nose for a couple of weeks and I'm getting worried it's connected. Is this something I can tackle myself with bleach, or do I absolutely need to call in a professional company for removal, and what’s the ballpark cost for a small room like that?

AC mold can absolutely affect your child's health, especially if it's the type that produces allergens or irritants. The runny nose you're noticing is a common reaction, as children are often more sensitive to airborne spores. In the UAE's humid climate, AC units that leak create a constant moisture source, allowing mold to thrive and spread spores into the room's air.

The black splotches behind the wardrobe are a major red flag. While not all black mold is the infamous "toxic black mold" (Stachybotrys), any visible growth from an AC leak should be treated seriously. DIY bleach cleaning is not recommended; it only bleaches the color and does not kill the root structure, often causing the mold to return stronger. More importantly, improper cleaning can aerosolize a high concentration of spores, potentially worsening the situation.

For a confirmed leak and visible growth, a professional assessment is the safest course. They will identify the mold species to determine the actual risk level and contain the area during remediation to prevent spores from spreading to other parts of the villa. The cost for a small room is generally more affordable than for a whole house, but you should request an on-site assessment for an accurate scope and quote. Focus on companies that provide before-and-after lab testing to verify the air quality is safe. Addressing the root cause—fixing the AC leak—is critical to prevent it from happening again.
