Is AC mold in baby's room urgent or DIY?« Back to Previous Page

The AC vent in our master bedroom in our Jumeirah villa has been blowing out a damp, earthy smell for the last couple of weeks, and now I’m seeing small black speckles around the edges of the vent. My husband thinks it’s just dust, but I’m worried it’s mold, especially with our newborn sleeping in the room with us. How urgent is it to get this professionally cleaned, or can I handle it myself with a bleach spray?

With a newborn in the room, this is a situation that warrants immediate professional assessment, not a DIY bleach spray. Bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces and can release harmful fumes, making the air quality worse for an infant.

The damp, earthy smell is a classic indicator of microbial growth, and the black speckles are a visual confirmation. In Dubai's climate, AC systems constantly manage high humidity and can develop significant condensation, creating an ideal environment for mold inside the ducts themselves, far beyond what a surface wipe can address. The risk isn't necessarily a single toxic species, but the constant exposure to elevated spore levels, which can severely irritate an infant's developing respiratory system, potentially worsening allergies or asthma.

For a case involving a newborn and visible growth, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They can use borescopes to see inside the ductwork and take surface samples for a lab culture. This is the only way to identify the species present and the true extent of the contamination, which dictates the correct remediation method. Verifiable before-and-after testing is what separates a proper remediation from a superficial cleaning. Given your location in a villa, the entire system, including the internal evaporator coil and drip pan, should be assessed.
