Is AC mold in my bedroom a health emergency?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom has been leaking a little onto the carpet for a couple of weeks, and now I’m seeing a small black patch of what looks like mold spreading out from the wall near the unit. We've lived in this Jumeirah Village Circle apartment for 2 years and just noticed this last weekend. My husband thinks it’s not a big deal, but I’m worried about our health. Is this something I need to get an emergency specialist for this week, or can it wait for our building's maintenance to get to it eventually?

Based on your description, this is a situation that warrants immediate attention and should not be considered a minor issue. A continuously leaking AC unit in Dubai's climate creates a perfect storm for mold growth. The high ambient humidity, combined with the constant moisture from the leak and the organic material in your carpet (dust, skin cells), provides an ideal breeding ground.

The black patch you see is likely the visible colony, but the real concern is the mycotoxins and spores it is releasing into your bedroom's air, which you and your husband are breathing for hours each night. Prolonged exposure can lead to a range of health issues, from allergic reactions (sneezing, itchy eyes) and asthma exacerbations to more severe respiratory problems and chronic sinusitis. Your concern for your health is absolutely valid.

While this may not be a "midnight emergency," it is a serious indoor air quality issue that should be addressed this week. Building maintenance will likely only fix the leak, not the resulting microbial contamination. The mold growth within the wall cavity, under the carpet, and potentially inside the AC unit itself requires professional assessment and remediation.

I strongly recommend you cease using that AC unit immediately and arrange for a professional inspection. Our certified team at Saniservice uses moisture meters, thermal imaging, and air sampling to determine the full extent of the contamination, in line with UAE standards for indoor environmental quality. We can then provide a protocol for safe, effective remediation. Please call us at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com to schedule an assessment. Do not attempt to clean it yourself, as improper disturbance can aerosolize the spores and significantly worsen the contamination.
