Is AC mold in my Dubai apartment urgent?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment seems to be blowing out a really damp, earthy smell, and I just spotted a few small black spots around the vent in our main bedroom here in JLT. We’ve had the AC running constantly for months to combat the humidity. How urgent is it that I get a professional to look at this, or can it wait until the weekend?

Yes, it is urgent to get a professional inspection for that smell and visible spotting. In Dubai's climate, a constantly running AC unit is a prime environment for mold growth due to the condensation that forms inside. The damp, earthy smell is a strong indicator of microbial volatile organic compounds (mVOCs), which are gases produced by active mold colonies.

The black spots around the vent suggest the growth is already established and is being blown into your living space. For individuals with allergies, asthma, or other respiratory sensitivities, this can quickly lead to worsened symptoms like congestion, coughing, and irritation. Prolonged exposure, even for healthy adults, can cause persistent discomfort.

While the weekend is only a few days away, it is advisable not to wait. In the interim, you can switch off the specific AC unit in the bedroom to prevent further spore dispersal. Do not attempt to clean the spots yourself with bleach, as this can aggravate the colony and cause it to release more spores. A proper inspection will involve looking inside the ductwork and the AC unit's internal cooling coil and drip pan—areas you cannot see—to assess the full extent of the contamination. The remediation process for a central AC system is specialized, as simply wiping the vent is ineffective. A professional assessment will determine the necessary steps to resolve the issue safely.
