Is AC mold making me sick and what to do?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our bedroom has been leaking a little onto the carpet for a while, and now I’m seeing black spots along the base of the wall. Lately, I’ve been waking up with a stuffy head and a sore throat that goes away once I leave the apartment. Could this be mold making me sick, and what’s the first thing I should do about it?

Yes, your symptoms are consistent with exposure to mold growth from an AC leak. The constant dampness from the leak, combined with Dubai's high humidity, creates an ideal environment for mold. The black spots along the baseboard are a clear visual indicator, and waking with a stuffy head and sore throat that improves when you leave the room strongly suggests the indoor air quality is the cause.

The first step is to stop the moisture source. Have a certified HVAC technician repair the AC leak immediately. Do not attempt to clean the mold yourself with bleach, as this can aerosolize spores and worsen the problem. For a small, visible patch, you can carefully wipe the area with a detergent solution, but this only addresses surface growth.

Given the symptoms and the fact the mold is growing on a porous material like drywall and carpet, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They can assess the extent of the hidden growth behind the baseboard or under the carpet, which is common in such scenarios. In the UAE, remediation should follow standards like the IICRC S520 for proper containment and removal to prevent cross-contamination. The key is to identify and remove the moisture source and all affected materials to resolve the health issue.
