Is AC mold making me sick? Urgent?« Back to Previous Page

Our AC unit in the master bedroom has been leaking a bit for the last couple of weeks, and now I'm seeing these small black spots spreading on the wall behind the curtain. My throat has been feeling scratchy in the mornings and I'm worried it's connected. How urgent is it that I get a professional to deal with this, or can I handle it myself with bleach?

Based on your description, this is a situation that requires immediate professional attention. The black spots spreading from a leaking AC unit are highly indicative of active mold growth, a serious concern in Dubai's humid climate where condensation and year-round AC use create ideal conditions for proliferation.

Your scratchy throat is a classic symptom of exposure to mold spores, particularly from species like Stachybotrys chartarum (often called "black mold") or Aspergillus. These mycotoxins and allergens become airborne and can cause significant respiratory irritation, allergic reactions, and other health issues, especially with continuous exposure during sleep.

Attempting a DIY remediation with bleach is strongly discouraged. Bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces like drywall, as it only bleaches the surface mold without addressing the root colony inside the material. Furthermore, improper handling can aerosolize the spores, significantly increasing your exposure and contaminating other areas of your home. UAE regulations and best practices require containment, professional-grade antimicrobials, and specialized equipment like HEPA filtration to safely remove the mold and the contaminated material.

The leaking AC unit itself is also a critical issue. The internal drip pan, coils, and ductwork are likely contaminated, acting as a reservoir to continually spread spores throughout the room. This requires a separate HVAC hygienization process.

Given the visible growth and your physical symptoms, this is urgent. I recommend you cease using the AC in that room immediately and contact a certified professional for inspection and remediation.
