Is AC mold making my toddler cough?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our bedroom in Jumeirah has been making a weird damp smell for the last couple of weeks, and this morning I spotted a patch of black spots around the vent on the ceiling. My husband thinks it’s not a big deal, but I’m worried it’s making our toddler cough at night. How urgent is it to get this mold professionally cleaned, and could it be spreading inside the AC unit itself?

Yes, AC mold can definitely cause or worsen a toddler's cough. The damp smell and visible black spots around the vent strongly indicate microbial growth, which releases spores and volatile organic compounds into the air you breathe. Toddlers are particularly susceptible due to their developing respiratory systems, and nighttime exposure in a bedroom can lead to symptoms like congestion, coughing, and irritated airways.

In Dubai's climate, this is a common issue. The constant cycling between extreme outdoor heat and cool, humid air inside AC ducts creates perfect conditions for condensation and mold growth. The problem is almost certainly inside the AC unit itself and the connected ductwork; the vent is merely the visible sign.

This situation warrants a professional inspection. DIY cleaning the vent cover won't address the reservoir of growth inside. A proper assessment involves using borescopes to inspect the internal evaporator coils and ductwork. For a toddler's bedroom, I would consider this urgent. The continued operation of the unit will keep dispersing contaminants.

The remediation must address the source. This means a full internal cleaning of the AC unit, not just the visible areas, followed by application of an EPA-approved, non-toxic biostatic coating to prevent regrowth. Any company you hire should be able to provide before-and-after data or imagery showing the internal condition. Verifiable results are key, as the market has many operators who perform superficial cleaning.
