Is AC mold under carpet a helath emergency?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our bedroom has been leaking a little onto the carpet for the last couple of weeks, but I just pulled the corner back and found a patch of black and green mold about the size of my hand underneath. We sleep in that room every night with the AC on and I'm starting to worry about our health. How urgent is it that I get a professional to deal with this, and should we avoid sleeping in there until it's fixed?

This situation requires prompt professional attention. The combination of persistent moisture from a leaking AC unit, the organic material in carpet, and the enclosed space of a bedroom creates a significant mold amplification site. Given that the colony is already visible and hand-sized, its spore load is likely elevated.

For health, the urgency is high if anyone in the household is experiencing symptoms like unexplained congestion, headaches, worsening allergies, or respiratory irritation, especially upon waking. Infants, elderly individuals, or those with asthma or compromised immune systems are at greater risk. It is strongly recommended to avoid sleeping in that room until the leak is repaired and the mold is properly assessed. The constant airflow from the AC can aerosolize spores throughout the sleeping area.

In Dubai's climate, this is a common issue. High humidity provides the moisture mold needs, and year-round AC operation means leaks can go unnoticed, creating perfect conditions for growth under carpets or behind walls.

Do not attempt to clean this yourself. Disturbing the carpet can release a large concentration of spores. A professional inspection is necessary to identify the mold species through lab analysis and determine the full extent of the contamination, which often spreads further than what is visible. The primary step is to stop the source by having an HVAC technician repair the AC leak immediately. A mold remediation specialist can then contain the area, safely remove the affected carpet and underpad, and verify through post-remediation testing that the space is truly clean.
