Is AC mold urgent and should we move rooms?« Back to Previous Page

Our AC unit in the bedroom closet has been leaking a little for the past couple of weeks, and now I’m seeing small black spots spreading on the wall behind our headboard. My wife has been waking up with a stuffy nose and a sore throat every morning, and it’s starting to worry me. How urgent is it that we get this professionally cleaned, and should we be sleeping in another room in the meantime?

Based on the symptoms and the visible growth you've described, this situation should be considered urgent. The combination of a confirmed moisture source from the AC leak and the onset of health symptoms in your wife is a significant red flag. The small black spots are likely Stachybotrys chartarum (often called "black mold") or another species like Cladosporium, both of which are common in water-damaged buildings and are known to produce mycotoxins and allergens.

The Dubai climate is a major contributing factor. Our high year-round humidity, combined with condensation from air conditioning systems, creates an ideal breeding ground for mold. A small leak inside a confined closet space allows for rapid colonization. The health effects you're seeing—morning stuffy nose and sore throat—are classic symptoms of mold exposure, often resulting from inhaling spores and microbial volatile organic compounds (mVOCs) throughout the night.

You should relocate to another room immediately until the issue is professionally resolved. Continuing to sleep in that environment will only prolong exposure and potentially worsen symptoms, which can escalate to chronic sinusitis, respiratory issues, or allergic reactions in sensitive individuals.

Do not attempt to clean this yourself. Disturbing the mold without proper containment and air filtration will aerosolize the spores, spreading the contamination throughout your home. This requires professional assessment and remediation. Our certified inspectors use moisture meters, thermal imaging, and air/o-surface sampling to determine the full extent of the contamination, which is often far greater than what is visible.
